Workers’ Safety: Have MOT And MOM Been Sleeping At The Wheel?

Workers' Safety: Have the MOT and MOM been Sleeping at the Wheel?

Senior Minister of State for Transport Amy Khor says that the government is reviewing measures to improve the safety of workers who are transported on lorries.

Ms Khor said that implementing more safety features onboard such as seat belts is not feasible because it would incur more costs for companies.

It is alarming that the government is once again putting profits over people, considering the recent spate of accidents which have resulted in multiple deaths and injuries.

There is nothing wrong with using lorries to transport workers – even the Singapore Armed Forces uses “three-tonners” to transport troops.

The ship may not be broken, but the captain might be sleeping at the wheel.

The Importance of editorial independence

On the news today,

Leader of the opposition Pritam Singh pressed further for a ballpark figure for funding.

He also circled back to the issue of editorial independence, pulling out a cover of The New Paper from 1997.

It was a checklist to help you decide how to vote. Minister spoke earlier about objectivity and balance. The only thing objective about this cover page is EPL (English Premier League) scores.

“The checklist, essentially told voters what you’ve vote for if you vote for the PAP”

Happy Mother's Day

Happy mother’s birthday to all mother around the world.

You have worked tirelessly 24/7 to nurture us till what we are today.

Thank you for all the hard work, nothing in this world can express how much I appreciate your love and care.

SPH to restructure media business into not-for-profit entity

Highlight
• The restructuring into a company limited by guarantee will allow SPH’s media business to get funding from private and public sources, including getting extra financial support from the Government.
• Following more questions about maintaining editorial independence, SPH chief executive officer Ng Yat Chung appeared to lose his cool and said he took umbrage at such questions.

Pointing to reporters present at the press conference, he said that their media outlets “receive substantial funding from various sources”, but they do not describe themselves as “bowing to the needs of advertisers in doing your job”.

“(At) SPH, we always have advertising, but never pander to the needs of advertisers… The fact that you dare to question (the editorial independence) of SPH titles… I don't believe even where you come from, you concede in doing your job,” Mr Ng said.
“I must call this out… Chairman is a gentleman. I’m not.”

In my opinion SPH Chairman Dr Lee Boon Yang former Member of Parliament did a great job answering questions coming from various reporters. It very unfortunate that SPH CEO Ng Yat Chung former NOL CEO take "Umbrage" at question put up by CNA Digital reporter. SPH CEO Ng should know that the company is undergoing restructuring of the company to stay afloat in the digital era. The reporters is just asking valid question which is the interest of the public, shareholders and many other advertisers. Instead of pathing a route for advertisers and public to continue support, CEO Ng had cause a great damage that might result to beyond repair. Evening our Home Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam felt that it unfortunate.

Shareholders might want to consider to remove the current CEO and replace a capable CEO which might be able to revive the current state of the company.

Stop Gambling With Our Lives

We told them one year ago and we’ll tell them again - stop gambling with our lives! Cabinet is not the place for “test here, test there” and a ministerial post should never be a highly-paid apprenticeship.

Lockdown 2.0 Looms Due To Irresponsible Management Of Covid-19 Situation

Lockdown 2.0 Looms due to Irresponsible Management of Covid-19 Situation

Singapore now has nine active COVID-19 clusters (as of May 3 2021).

At least half of these clusters appear to stem from contact with imported cases.

Concerns were already raised back in January 2021 that imported cases could lead to a surge in community cases.

This was on the back of emerging mutant strains of the Covid-19 virus, lack of symptoms shown by those infected, and the likelihood of reinfections.

But in its short-sighted haste to open the borders, the government had no qualms about putting Singaporeans’ lives at risk.

Even when countries like India were marking record high cases of infections, the government was reluctant to shut its doors, using the justification that a longer quarantine period was all that is necessary.

Only amidst public outcry did we see a dramatic one-day U-turn in policy.

What is worrying is how Singapore is left chasing shadows because of the failure of the government to stand firm on border controls.
